The Truth About Therapy

Therapy is not just talking. Therapy is different than chatting with a friend over coffee. You’ll be invited to share and reflect more deeply about your experiences, and the therapist offers their observations and insights in response.

Therapy is not advice. Therapy equips you to take on whatever roadblocks may be interfering with your life and relationships. It’s intended to increase your agency, not tell you what to do.

Therapy is not about blaming parents. Blaming involves deferring responsibility. Therapy should empower you to take responsibility for your current well being, and hold accountable those who had a responsibility to you.

Therapy is a real relationship. Therapists are clinicians like doctors and nurses and receive specialized training. You’re paying for the knowledge and experience they’re bringing to the relationship, but the genuine care you should feel from them can’t be taught.
